About the Women, Infants, and Children's Supplemental Nutrition Program
WIC (Women, Infants, and Children)
Supplemental Nutrition Program provides nutrition screening, and nutrition
education by Registered Dietitians. Supplemental foods, and referrals, for
women (pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding), infants, and children less
than 5 years of age, are also provided. The WIC program promotes
breastfeeding, and offers education to clients
WIC benefits include:

Helps pregnant women see physicians earlier and increases the number of women receiving timely prenatal care.

Improves the length of pregnancy and birth weight

Support and counseling for breastfeeding

Improves the diets of women and children

WIC children are better immunized
-
WIC children do better on vocabulary scores
Participants use WIC coupons at grocery stores to purchase nutritious food items prescribed to improve their diet and health. Coupons have approved food items listed on them.
To be eligible on the basis of income, applicants' gross income (before taxes are withheld) must fall at or below 185 percent of the U.S. Poverty Income Guidelines. The guidelines for WIC are shown below.
