Proper Hand Washing is Key in Protection from Cold and Flu Viruses
December 1, 2011
With the cold and flu season approaching, the Licking County Health Department would like to offer a reminder: proper hand washing is a simple and effective way to gain protection from these types of illnesses.
“Parents and teachers should take the time to practice proper hand washing in order to set an example for children. This will help to instill in them the importance of doing so and help them to develop proper hygiene habits,” said Joe Ebel, Health Commissioner.
To properly wash your hands, use soap and warm water and rub your hands together in order to create a full lather. This should be done for twenty seconds, or the length of time it takes to sing “Happy Birthday” twice. Be sure to scrub your wrists and under your fingernails as well. Rinse your hands and dry them using a paper towel or hand dryer. If possible, use a paper towel to turn off the water in order to prevent contaminating your hands after they are clean.
If soap and water are not available, an alcohol-based hand sanitizer can be substituted. In order to be effective, these products should contain at least 60% alcohol. Apply a generous amount of the product to your hands, and rub the product all over your hands until they are dry.
Hand washing should be done after going to the restroom, before and after caring for someone who is ill, after blowing your nose or sneezing, before eating, and after changing diapers.
