Proper Septic System Maintenance Can Prevent Costly Problems

August 26, 2011

LICKING COUNTY, OHIO – Keeping your septic system properly maintained can be a low cost way to avoid expensive repairs.  Maintaining a system in good working order also protects the environment and your family and neighbors from the hazards caused by illegally discharging sewage.

The Licking County Health Department recommends the following activities to keep your septic system working correctly:

  • Have your septic tank pumped every 3 years
  • Do not place any buildings or other structures on top of your system
  • Keep downspout and sump pump drains away from your system
  • Repair any faucet or toilet leaks to avoid adding extra water to your system

The Health Department recently received a grant from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency to implement a program to remind homeowners to have their septic tanks pumped.  Reminders will be mailed out to homeowners in September, and homeowners will be asked to send a postcard back to the Health Department with information about their system.  This information will be used to create an accurate database of the septic systems in the county.

If you have any questions about how to maintain your septic system you can call the Health Department at 740-349-6535 or visit www.lickingcohealth.org.
